Activated Carbon for Marine Aquariums

Used for several decades in aquaristics, activated carbon originates from filtration techniques developed in industrial water treatment. Its adoption in marine aquariums became widespread in the 1980s–1990s, with the pursuit of clearer and chemically stable water.

Thanks to its microporous structure with a very large adsorption surface, activated carbon effectively captures dissolved organic compounds, medication residues, toxins released by certain corals, and undesirable water discolorations. It thus improves transparency and limits substances that could harm sensitive organisms.

Easy to use in a filter or dedicated reactor, activated carbon is a reliable complement to biological filtration. Used in a controlled manner and renewed regularly, it helps maintain a clear, balanced, and healthy marine aquarium.
