PhosBond Seachem 1 L for aquarium

PhosBond is a phosphate absorber that combines aluminum oxide and granular ferric oxide in a single material. It is designed to quickly remove phosphates and silicates in both saltwater and freshwater. Its high porosity and surface area provide a large binding capacity, and its physical strength is intended to prevent degradation under mechanical stress.

Main features

Action: quickly removes phosphate and silicate.

Media type: aluminum oxide coated with ferric oxide.

Properties: high porosity and surface area for strong binding capacity.

Format: 1 L.

Comparison of phosphate strippers Seachem

Product Bound PO4
PhosGuard (aluminum oxide) 0.87 mg/g
PhosBond (hybrid GFO and aluminum oxide) 1.19 mg/g
PhosNet (GFO) 1.41 mg/g

Sizes: 100 ml, 250 ml, 500 ml, 1 L, 4 L.

Instructions

For best results, PhosBond should be rinsed before use and positioned to maximize water flow through the media, without tumbling of the material as the water passes through.

It can be used in a cartridge filter, a media chamber, a canister filter, or any high-flow area of a trickle filter. The use of a filter bag is recommended.

Usage Dosage
Salt water 60 ml (1/4 cup) for 200 L
Freshwater 60 ml (1/4 cup) per 400 L

Leave the product in place for 4 days, then test the concentrations of phosphate or silicate with MultiTest Phosphate or MultiTest Silicate.

If the concentration of the targeted component has not dropped to around 0.02 mg/L, replace PhosBond. Otherwise, leave it in place until the levels start to increase again.

As long as the concentrations remain under control, the product is not depleted. Excessive treatment is not recommended. PhosBond is not an exchange resin and does not release anything into the water.

The media can be removed, dried, and put back into service until it is depleted. Continuous use of small amounts is described as preferable to intermittent use of large amounts.

FAQ

How to use PhosBond? How long does it work and when is it depleted ?

PhosBond is recommended for use in small quantities and should be changed frequently. In an environment with a too high phosphate reading, PhosBond can become depleted quickly (4 to 5 days). Place the product in a high-flow area and test the phosphate levels, changing as needed.

When the level is below 0.2 ppm (mg/L), leave this portion of PhosBond in the filter and continue testing each week until you observe a rise in phosphate indicating it's time to replace the media. In the presence of low phosphate levels, the media absorbs silicate from the system. It is indicated as inert and safe to leave in the filter.

You indicate a high capacity, but company X claims that its GFO has a much higher capacity. Is this false advertising ?

It is indicated that it is possible to modify the apparent capacity of a GFO during tests according to the conditions (pH and phosphate concentration). The stated capacity is presented as the amount of phosphate that the media can completely remove at a pH of 8.4.

Can I use PhosBond in a media reactor ?

It is not recommended, as the tumbling action of a media reactor can cause the production of dust from this media.

How is it different from PhosGuard, PhosNet, and phosfiltrum (aquavitro) ?

The main difference noted between these media is capacity. PhosGuard is indicated as having the lowest capacity at 0.82 mg/g of bound PO4 and as the most economical. PhosBond is indicated with a higher capacity than PhosGuard at 1.19 mg/g of bound PO4 and as combining the benefits of PhosGuard and pure GFO. PhosNet is indicated as having the highest capacity of the phosphate absorbers. Seachem to 1.41 mg/g of bound PO4 and as a pure GFO. Aquavitro Phosfiltrum is indicated as a very high-capacity GFO (1.71 mg/g of bound PO4) producing very little dust.

I was told that products containing aluminum oxide will release aluminum, which will close the... corals for weeks and could even damage them. Is that correct ?

It is indicated that controlled experiments were conducted in fresh and saltwater on the solubility and toxicity of aluminum. The described results indicate that, under reef conditions (pH near 8), no detectable soluble aluminum is released by alumina. Under low pH conditions and high doses, soluble aluminum can be released; at three times the label dosing rate, 0.2 mg/L of aluminum is indicated at a pH of 5.3.

It is also stated that aluminum oxide is not easily absorbed into the cell to cause negative reactions. Even at three times the dose, soft-bodied corals such as Sarcophyton are not affected.

Company X says that I don't need to replace their phosphate absorber for several months, while your instructions indicate that PhosBond should be replaced every 4 days during phosphate reduction. Does this make PhosBond an inferior product ?

It is stated that the replacement frequency is linked to the rate of phosphate absorption. PhosBond is described as absorbing phosphate very quickly and reaching its full capacity in 4 days when phosphate is available in large quantities. The 4-day replacement period is described as a function of the media's speed of action, not its maximum capacity.

Absorbent media intended for aquarist use. Regular monitoring of aquarium parameters is recommended when using phosphate and silicate absorbers.
