About nitrite and nitrate

Nitrates originate from the nitrification of ammonium. During the initial stages of the bacterial process, nitrite is produced. This compound is extremely harmful to animals, especially in freshwater aquariums. When nitrification is functioning properly, nitrite is converted into nitrate, which is much less toxic.

Nitrite concentrations higher than 0.05 mg/L are mainly observed in aquariums that are in the cycling phase or equipped with nitrate filters. Regular monitoring is essential to prevent any risk to the organisms.

Nitrate directly influences water quality. In marine aquariums, high concentrations disrupt the growth of corals sensitive. In all aquariums, an excessive concentration promotes the growth of algae. Conversely, some very low-nutrient coral aquariums may exhibit a lack of nitrate.

In freshwater aquariums, a maximum concentration of 50 mg/L is generally accepted. In marine aquariums, the concentration should not exceed 20 mg/L, and for breeding purposes... hard corals, values below 10 mg/L are sought.

Usage and measurement principle

The measurement is based on a colorimetric comparison after the reagents react with the water sample. The concentration of nitrite should be measured before that of nitrate because a high nitrite content can influence the nitrate reading and require a correction.

For nitrate concentrations exceeding 20 mg/L, a preliminary dilution of the sample allows the measurement range to be extended, and the final result must then be corrected by a multiplication factor.

The Standard reference solution allows for the control of test reliability when the measured values are very low, thus ensuring the proper functioning of the reagents.

Durability and storage

The reagents can be used for 6 months after opening. They should be stored in a dark and cool place to maintain the reliability of the measurements.

Regular monitoring of nitrite and nitrate helps to maintain a stable biological balance and water quality suitable for the requirements of reef and freshwater aquariums.
