About Calcium and Magnesium

Calcium and magnesium are among the main natural components of seawater, along with sodium, potassium, chloride, and sulfate. In organisms forming a calcareous skeleton, calcium is the main element of the mineral structure, while magnesium plays a fundamental role in biochemical processes and the stability of this structure.

In the marine aquarium, these elements are continuously consumed by cellular metabolism and the growth of calcareous skeletons. Regular monitoring allows maintaining stable and nature-like conditions, avoiding imbalances and long-term damage.

In natural seawater, calcium concentration is between 400 and 410 mg/L, while magnesium varies between 1280 and 1320 mg/L, corresponding to a ratio of about 1:3.25. This test allows precise monitoring and adjustment of this ratio in the aquarium.

Usage and Measurement Principle

The measurement is done by colorimetric titration. The calcium concentration is determined first, followed by magnesium from the same sample. The color change from light blue to colorless indicates the endpoint of the titration, allowing the corresponding concentration to be read directly using the provided tables.

The syringes should always be used with the same reagent to avoid cross-contamination. Reading is done at the piston level, regardless of air bubbles present in the tip.

Shelf Life and Storage

The reagents are usable for 6 months after opening. It is recommended to store them in a dark and cool place to ensure the reliability of the measurements.

This test is designed for regular monitoring of essential marine aquarium parameters, ensuring optimal conditions for the growth and stability of reef organisms.
