Common name: Darwin clownfish. This fish has an elongated body and resembles the Amphiprion ocellaris, but the orange color of the ocellaris is replaced by black. It is recommended to keep it with an anemone where it can find refuge. If you don't have one, it will make do with a colony of Rhodactis or Euphyllia.

Amphiprion darwini – Black and White Clownfish, Similar to the Ocellaris

Amphiprion darwini, also known as the Darwin Clownfish, is a naturally dark variant of the Amphiprion ocellaris. It retains the classic clownfish morphology, with an elongated body and three white bands, but its body is entirely black, except for its snout, which is often slightly orange depending on the individual.

An Elegant Alternative to the Orange Ocellaris

This fish is highly appreciated by aquarists seeking a subtle and refined clownfish. Its contrast of intense black and pure white fits perfectly into modern reef aquariums. Amphiprion darwini is a peaceful, sociable, and easy-to-acclimate fish.

Behavior and Compatibility

Amphiprion darwini can be kept alone, in pairs, or in small groups. It easily cohabits with the majority of corals, non-aggressive invertebrates, and peaceful fish. Territorial without being aggressive, it attaches itself to a corner of the aquarium it considers its refuge.

It is highly recommended to provide it with a host anemone (such as a Stichodactyla), but in the absence of an anemone, it will gladly adopt a Rhodactis or Euphyllia as a substitute, where it will find a comfortable shelter.

Feeding and Maintenance

This clownfish is easy to feed and accepts:

  • Marine fish-specific pellets and flakes
  • Brine shrimp, mysis, frozen plankton
  • Protein-enriched marine foods

It is advisable to keep Amphiprion darwini in an aquarium of at least 60 liters, with stable water, moderate flow, and rocky or coral resting areas.

Why Choose Amphiprion darwini?

  • Elegant and rare black clownfish
  • Peaceful and easy-going behavior
  • Compatible with corals and invertebrates
  • Adapts to the presence or absence of an anemone
  • Perfect for modern reef aquariums

Amphiprion darwini is an aesthetic and robust alternative to the classic clownfish. Its unique appearance and sociable behavior make it an excellent choice for reef enthusiasts seeking originality while maintaining simple and efficient care.
