Common name: Tricolor Angelfish. This fish has an oval-shaped yellow body at the front and the rest is black. The Holacanthus tricolor juveniles are quite sociable; for their well-being, they require a reasonably sized aquarium with a minimum capacity of 800 liters. It is easier to acclimate them in a mature aquarium where the algae are well developed.

Holacanthus tricolor: a Bicolored Angelfish Iconic to the Caribbean
The Holacanthus tricolor, often called the tricolor angelfish, is a majestic species native to the coral reefs of the Western Atlantic and the Caribbean. This marine fish is distinguished by its spectacular coloring: the front of its body is a bright yellow, while the back is a deep black, creating a striking visual contrast in an aquarium.
Belonging to the Pomacanthidae family, the Holacanthus tricolor is a true centerpiece for large capacity fish-only aquariums. Very active, it swims in open water and adapts perfectly to rocky areas rich in algae.
Behavior Evolves with Age
In juvenile specimens, the behavior is rather sociable and curious. As adults, the Holacanthus tricolor becomes more territorial and dominant, especially when faced with other angelfish. It is therefore recommended not to associate it with other species of the same family unless in a very spacious aquarium.
Ideal Maintenance Conditions
- Minimum required volume: 800 liters
- Water temperature: between 23°C and 27°C
- Water flow: moderate to strong
- Lighting: medium to intense to promote algae growth
This fish is ideally introduced into a mature aquarium, where algae are well developed, as it actively grazes on them. It is also advisable to have a setup rich in live rocks and hiding places.
Feeding the Holacanthus tricolor
The diet of the tricolor angelfish is omnivorous with a tendency towards herbivory. In an aquarium, it will easily accept:
- dried seaweed (nori),
- spirulina-enriched pellets,
- defrosted mysis, artemia, krill,
- and pieces of mussels or shrimp.
It is important to feed the Holacanthus tricolor several times a day in small quantities to prevent deficiencies and limit aggressive behaviors.
Reserved for Fish-Only Aquariums
Although stunning, the Holacanthus tricolor is not compatible with reef aquariums containing soft corals or LPS. Indeed, it can pick at coral polyps and disrupt the balance of a reef tank. It is therefore recommended to keep it in a well-designed fish-only aquarium, in the company of robust and non-aggressive fish.
