Strombus alatus, also known as the reef burrowing snail, is a highly valued marine mollusk in reef aquariums for its useful and discreet behavior. It plays an essential role in substrate maintenance by actively contributing to the oxygenation and natural cleaning of the sand.
Strombus alatus spends much of its time buried in the sand. It forages and aerates the substrate in search of microalgae, organic debris, and biofilms. This behavior helps maintain a living substrate, prevents sand compaction, and limits the appearance of potentially dangerous anaerobic zones.
In addition to its activity in the sand, it can also climb on live rocks to graze on unwanted algae, especially young shoots. Thus, it helps regulate algal flora without ever disturbing corals or other invertebrates present in the aquarium.
The Strombus alatus is an easy-to-acclimate and very resilient animal if conditions are met:
Minimum recommended volume: 100 liters
Substrate: fine to medium sand (minimum 2-3 cm thick)
Temperature: between 24°C and 28°C
Behavior: peaceful, active, diurnal, and nocturnal
Compatible with most fish, corals, shrimp, and other invertebrates, Strombus alatus is a peaceful cleaner that almost never interacts with other inhabitants. It does not disturb corals and does not attack smaller snails.
It can be integrated into a community or reef aquarium as long as a substrate is present. The presence of a small group of individuals can increase cleaning efficiency and ensure better substrate coverage.
An algivore and detritivore, Strombus alatus is an excellent natural solution against algae and organic matter accumulations. It helps maintain the cleanliness of the sand while improving gas exchange in the substrate.
Its thick, spiral shell is also a beautiful aesthetic addition to the aquarium decor, often with a pinkish-beige or brown hue.
Note: The Strombus alatus is a burrower. It is recommended to ensure that rocks are well-stabilized to prevent any tipping in case of sand disturbance around their base.
In summary, the Strombus alatus is an indispensable burrowing snail in any reef aquarium equipped with a sandy substrate. Robust, efficient, entirely peaceful, and useful, it actively contributes to the biological stability of your marine aquarium.
