Acropora microclados Strawberry Shortcake
The Acropora microclados Strawberry Shortcake is one of the most cherished strains among SPS corals. This coral is distinguished by its exceptional color combination: a neon green base contrasting with vivid pink to red tips. Its unique appearance and rapid growth make it a popular choice among reef aquarium enthusiasts.
Characteristics and Maintenance
Morphology and Color
The Acropora microclados Strawberry Shortcake develops a densely branched structure. Its thick and compact branches allow for rapid encrustation on its substrate. Its coloration is influenced by lighting and nutrients:
- Green base more or less intense
- Pink to red tips, enhanced under optimal light spectrum
- Slightly yellow polyps, adding even more contrast
Lighting
This coral requires powerful lighting to fully express its coloration. An intensity between 300 and 600 PAR is recommended, with a dominant blue spectrum (15,000K to 20,000K).
Insufficient lighting will lead to browning, while excess can cause stress if adaptation is too abrupt.
Water Flow
Medium to strong water flow is essential to ensure good oxygenation and prevent sediment deposition. It is recommended to use wide-flow pumps with random movement.
Water Quality
Like all Acropora, the Acropora microclados Strawberry Shortcake is sensitive to parameter variations:
- Nitrates: between 2 and 10 mg/L
- Phosphates: between 0.02 and 0.06 mg/L
- KH: between 7 and 8, to be kept very stable
- Calcium: 440 mg/L
- Magnesium: between 1350 and 1450 mg/L
Monitoring through ICP tests is recommended to adjust trace elements and ensure optimal growth.
Feeding
Although this coral derives most of its energy from photosynthesis via its zooxanthellae, nutritional supplementation promotes its growth and coloration:
- Artemia nauplii
- Frozen red plankton
- Specific pellets for SPS corals (400 - 800 µm)
- Amino acids and trace elements as supplements
Aggressiveness and Compatibility
This coral is not very aggressive, but it is sensitive to fast-growing and stinging corals like Euphyllia or Galaxea. It is advisable to leave it enough space to avoid competition.
