Selenium in Marine Aquariums

Selenium is a trace element present at very low levels in seawater. In reef aquariums, monitoring it has become much more common with the arrival of ICP analyses, which make it possible to detect trace elements precisely and avoid “blind” corrections.

Its main benefit in reef keeping is protection against oxidative stress, especially under powerful lighting, as well as helping maintain healthy tissues. On the other hand, an imbalance can become problematic: manufacturers emphasize the importance of staying close to natural levels and making corrections gradually.

In practice, selenium management follows a simple approach: reliable measurement (ideally via ICP), targeted adjustment if a deficiency is confirmed, then regular monitoring to maintain long-term stability in the tank.
