Overflow and spillway
Overflow and Weir for Marine Aquarium
Overflow and weir systems became popular with the rise of sump aquariums in the 1990s. Inspired by the hydraulic principles used in aquaculture and professional filtration, they allow for the safe transfer of water from the main tank to a sump.
The internal overflow is directly integrated into the aquarium and ensures a stable gravitational drainage, while maintaining a constant water level. The external weir is a suitable solution for non-drilled aquariums, allowing for the addition of a sump without structural modification.
These systems improve filtration, increase the total water volume, and facilitate the integration of a skimmer or technical equipment. When well-designed, they reduce noise, secure the flow, and contribute to the overall stability of a modern reef aquarium.
