Red Sea Refractometer for Marine Aquarium

Main Features

Why a Specific Seawater Refractometer

The majority of standard refractometers used in aquariums are designed to measure brine solutions based on sodium chloride. However, seawater contains nearly 70 different chemical elements, including calcium, magnesium, and potassium, which alters its refractive index.

This difference can cause a reading error of up to 1.5 ppt, with real consequences on the coloration and growth of corals. The Red Sea refractometer eliminates this source of error by measuring the actual absolute salinity of seawater.

Salinity, Refraction, and Temperature

The refractive index of a liquid varies according to its chemical composition and temperature. Refractometers not calibrated for reef use require complex correction tables to compensate for these variations.

The Red Sea refractometer is calibrated for direct use at 25°C, the reference temperature for reef aquariums, allowing immediate reading without correction factors.

Automatic Temperature Compensation (ATC)

The ATC function automatically compensates for slight differences between ambient temperature and the refractometer's calibration temperature. It provides a reliable measurement as long as the water sample and the device are at a similar temperature.

ATC does not compensate for significant differences between the sample temperature and the aquarium temperature, but it secures common measurements taken under normal conditions of use.
