The Macro Algae Reactor Tunze MAR 3182 is a complete bioremediation system for saltwater or freshwater aquariums of 500 to 1600 liters. It allows for the controlled cultivation of macroalgae such as Chaetomorpha ("spaghetti algae"), which effectively remove nitrates and phosphates while enriching the water with oxygen.
The MAR 3182 reactor uses the natural growth of algae to biologically detoxify the aquarium water. This bioremediation process reduces nitrates and phosphates, limits unwanted algae, improves water clarity, and promotes pH stability.
In addition to filtering the water, it also serves as a refuge for zooplankton and produces a natural food source for fish and corals. The water is thus oxygenated and biologically balanced, without the use of chemical resins.

The Tunze 3181 and 3182 reactors can be placed in the technical tank or outside, like an external filter. The water circulation induces a gentle rotation of the algae, ensuring homogeneous growth and optimal light exposure. The MAR 3182 operates with two eco chic refugium LEDs, specially designed for macroalgae photosynthesis. The recommended lighting duration is 12 to 18 hours per day, ideally alternating with the main aquarium lighting.
Algae harvesting is done every 3 to 4 weeks to maintain smooth rotation. The average production is about 350 g per month. A full reactor cleaning is advised once a year, or every 6 months if the pump shows signs of slowing. Using a Care Magnet Tunze is recommended to remove lime deposits without scratching the internal surfaces.
Designed and manufactured in Germany by Tunze Aquarientechnik GmbH, the MAR 3182 is a robust and reliable device, recognized for its durability and performance in demanding reef aquariums.
