Opistognathus aurifrons, also known as the yellowhead jawfish, is an original and endearing species. With its bright yellow head contrasting with its pale blue body with a hint of white, sprinkled with small light blue spots, it immediately catches the eye... while often remaining discreet at the entrance of its burrow.
This fish spends the majority of its time 20–30 cm from the entrance of its burrow, which it meticulously shapes in the sand. It is more sociable than it seems, with wild colonies consisting of interconnected individual galleries, each with a small chamber at the bottom.
In an aquarium, a minimum 5 cm layer of sand is enough for it to reproduce this behavior. It is fascinating to watch it choose stones of different sizes to reinforce the entrance, and close the burrow at night with a piece of rock or a forgotten frag plug!
It is recommended to create a calm space, away from powerful pumps, and to provide rocky areas near sandy beaches.
Opistognathus aurifrons is territorial but peaceful. It can be kept alone, in a pair, or in a small group if the tank is large enough. It coexists well with corals, peaceful invertebrates, and other non-aggressive fish. Avoid species that dig or are too dominant at the bottom.
It is carnivorous but quickly accepts a varied diet. Feeding should be targeted at the bottom or near the entrance of its burrow.
Opistognathus aurifrons is a perfect choice for enthusiasts of calm, observant, and constructive fish. It transforms every grain of sand into building material, and every corner of the aquarium into a well-organized territory. Discover it without hesitation!
