Balistoides conspicillum: Clown Triggerfish
The Balistoides conspicillum, more commonly known as the clown triggerfish, is one of the most impressive fish in marine aquariums. With its oval-shaped body and unique colors, it attracts all eyes. The lower part of its body is white adorned with large round black spots, reminiscent of clown patterns. Its back is black with a bright yellow spot, and its fins are subtly bluish. The area around its mouth has a very characteristic orange color.
This clown triggerfish is also equipped with three powerful dorsal spines which it deploys when it feels threatened. In an aquarium, as in nature, it remains very territorial and prefers to live alone. Its bold and sometimes dominant behavior requires careful selection of tank mates.
A fish with character for a very large aquarium
The Balistoides conspicillum easily reaches 45 to 50 cm in adulthood. Therefore, it requires an aquarium of at least 2000 liters, with a setup consisting of many solid rocks and open areas for swimming. It is preferable to introduce it alone in the aquarium or with robust, non-territorial fish of similar size.
This fish is not suitable for reef aquariums: it is not compatible with corals, mollusks, or crustaceans, which it considers potential prey. It can also disturb the décor or move objects in the tank, reflecting its exploratory and assertive behavior.
Feeding the clown triggerfish
The clown triggerfish is carnivorous and should be fed several times a day with a varied diet consisting of:
- Raw or thawed shrimp
- Mussels, squid, and pieces of fish
- Krill and other marine crustaceans
- Pellets rich in animal proteins
Offering a rich and diverse diet helps to limit destructive behaviors and ensures healthy and balanced growth.
A spectacular fish for enthusiasts
The Balistoides conspicillum is a fish that is both spectacular, robust, and charismatic. It is reserved for experienced aquarists with a very large aquarium. Keeping it alone is recommended unless in a large, well-planned community tank.
Its bright colors, unique morphology, and distinctive behavior make it a true centerpiece for an exceptional marine aquarium.

Balistre clown
Ma famille l'appelle Balistre clown ,avant c'était le gros! Il est avec un Thalassoma lunare ,ils s'entendent à merveille .Je l'ai habitué a manger a la main avec une moule cuite. Il a l'age de ma fille 10 ans et mesure 25 centimètres. Il n'ai pas agressif mais il faut que je le nourrisse avant de faire l'entretien du bac. Sinon c'est la morsure avec son bec qui arrache un grand morceau de chair, il vous reste a mettre un pansement ;il mange 2 moules par jour et des paillettes .Brocolis harricot et algue.Ne pas lui mettre d'oursins meme un diadème, c'est la mort de l oursin assuré ,il lui coupe les aiguilles et après il l'ouvre pour lui manger la chaire.
