Odonus niger: Blue Triggerfish

The Odonus niger, also known as the blue triggerfish, is an impressive fish due to its size and its dark shade nuanced with blue. This triggerfish has an oval-shaped, olive-brown body, with an olive head marked by a distinctive blue line that highlights its piercing gaze. Naturally found throughout the Indian Ocean up to the Red Sea, it is particularly appreciated in fish only aquariums for its peaceful behavior towards other fish.

Aquarium Maintenance Conditions

To keep an Odonus niger in good health, it is recommended to have a minimum 450-liter aquarium. This volume is necessary to meet its need for space and to accommodate its rapid growth during its juvenile age. A tank that is too small would cause stress and could hinder its development.

This fish, which is not very aggressive, can live alone or in pairs. If reproduction is desired, a harem of one male to ten females is necessary, though this remains complex in captivity. The aquarium setup should include many hiding spots and a clear area for swimming, as the Odonus niger is particularly active.

Feeding the Blue Triggerfish

The blue triggerfish Odonus niger follows a carnivorous diet. It primarily feeds on animal prey and also ingests substrate fragments, which contributes to the natural wear of its powerful teeth.

It is advisable to feed it several times a day with a variety of foods such as:

  • Shrimp, mussels, pieces of squid
  • Krill and brine shrimp
  • Enriched marine pellets for carnivorous fish

Compatibility and Precautions

The Odonus niger is not recommended for a reef aquarium because it may disturb corals and small invertebrates. However, it is perfectly suited for a fish only aquarium with fish of equal or larger size. It generally cohabits well with robust species but can become territorial if it lacks space.

Its elegant color and curious behavior make it an aesthetic and lively addition to a non-reef community tank.
