Balistapus undulatus: Wavy Triggerfish

The Balistapus undulatus, also known as the wavy triggerfish, is a fish with a dark green to beige oval-shaped body, adorned with yellow to orange oblique lines forming elegant patterns. As an adult, it can measure between 25 and 30 cm and live up to about ten years. Highly recognizable and spectacular, it catches the eye in a well-designed marine aquarium.

Behavior of the Wavy Triggerfish

Of a rather solitary temperament, the Balistapus undulatus can nonetheless be territorial and defensive, especially during the breeding season. It appreciates rocky cavities and crevices in which it shelters at night or when stressed. It cohabits poorly with small fish or invertebrates, which it may consider as prey.

Maintenance Conditions in an Aquarium

Maintaining this fish requires a minimum 800-liter aquarium. It is essential to provide it with a setup rich in hiding places and calm areas, as well as a substantial swimming space.

This triggerfish is completely incompatible with reef aquariums: it will attack corals, crustaceans, mollusks, and dislodge live rocks. It is therefore reserved for "fish only" or specific aquariums.

Diet

The Balistapus undulatus is an omnivore with a carnivorous tendency. In the wild, it feeds on fish, algae, sponges, gastropods, and small invertebrates. In captivity, it readily accepts:

  • Mussel or shrimp flesh
  • Krill and pieces of squid
  • Carnivorous foods in pellet form
  • Fresh algae or Nori leaves

To avoid deficiencies, make sure to provide it with a varied and balanced diet, distributed in several small meals a day.

An Exceptional Fish for Experienced Aquarists

With its impressive appearance and flamboyant colors, the Balistapus undulatus is an excellent choice for large, well-equipped tanks, without corals or invertebrates. Reserved for experienced aquarists, this triggerfish requires proper care, ample space, and a stable environment to express its full beauty.
