Rhinecanthus aculeatus: Picasso Triggerfish

The Rhinecanthus aculeatus, better known as the Picasso triggerfish, is a fascinating and highly recognizable fish. Its light brown oval-shaped body is adorned with geometric patterns and colorful lines reminiscent of the works of the famous painter Pablo Picasso. On its back, two white spots elegantly contrast with the other colors, offering an aesthetic worthy of a living artwork.

Native to the coral reefs of the Indo-Pacific Ocean, this triggerfish is known for its hardiness, liveliness, and sometimes curious or even territorial behavior. Its unique appearance makes it a preferred species in large fish-only aquariums.

Care Conditions for the Picasso Triggerfish

For the well-being of the Rhinecanthus aculeatus, it is recommended to have an aquarium of at least 600 liters. This volume meets its needs for free swimming and territory. It is important to set up a décor rich in hiding places and live rocks so it can establish its territory and find refuge.

It is advisable not to introduce it into a reef aquarium, as it may attack corals, mollusks, small fish, and invertebrates. It is a fish to keep alone or with other robust species of similar size.

Feeding the Rhinecanthus aculeatus

An opportunistic carnivore, the Picasso triggerfish requires a varied and rich diet to stay in top shape. It should be fed two to three times a day with:

  • Shrimp, mussels, pieces of squid
  • Krill, brine shrimp, and small frozen fish
  • Marine pellets suitable for carnivorous fish

It is important to provide prey with shells (such as mollusks or crustaceans) to promote the natural wear of its teeth, which grow continuously.

A Spectacular and Expressive Fish

The Picasso triggerfish is one of the most expressive marine fish. It often observes its environment intently, interacts with its caretaker, and firmly defends its territory. It is a charismatic animal that will bring life to a well-designed fish-only aquarium.
