Stichodactyla tapetum, known as the carpet anemone, is a magnificent reef anemone from the family Stichodactylidae. Highly sought after for its disc-shaped form covered with short and colorful tentacles, it forms a true living carpet on the substrate of the marine aquarium.
This anemone is particularly favored by Amphiprion such as Amphiprion clarkii, polymnus, perideraion, or chrysogaster, as well as small symbiotic shrimps like Thor or Periclimenes. It develops a symbiotic relationship with these species, offering them protection and shelter within its stinging tentacles.
The Stichodactyla tapetum can be fed every 2 days with small prey such as rotifers or brine shrimp nauplii (<0.5 cm). Proper feeding enhances its colors and longevity. Propagation is difficult, if not impossible, with this species, so it is important to choose a suitable permanent location.
Stichodactyla tapetum is an ideal anemone for any reef aquarist wishing to observe the magic of symbiotic relationships. It adapts well to mature, well-lit, and properly circulated tanks, and adds a spectacular touch to the aquarium floor.
