Pomacanthus annularis: Ringed Angelfish for Large Volume Marine Aquariums
The Pomacanthus annularis, also known as the ringed angelfish, is a spectacular species highly sought after by experienced aquarists. This fish has an oval-shaped body with a golden-brown to orange hue, adorned with large electric blue horizontal stripes that intensify with age. As an adult, it can reach up to 40 cm, requiring a large capacity marine aquarium.
In its natural habitat, it thrives along the coral reefs of the Indian and Pacific Oceans. Territorial and robust, this angelfish develops a strong personality, making it a centerpiece in the tank.
Care Conditions for Pomacanthus annularis

The aquarium should contain a decor rich in live rock forming caves and hiding spots. A good swimming space is essential for its well-being. The Pomacanthus annularis particularly enjoys calm areas for resting while actively exploring the entire tank.
Behavior and Cohabitation
This angelfish is of a territorial nature and is not recommended with other Pomacanthus, except in very large tanks with simultaneous introduction. It can coexist with active fish of similar size, but small calm fish or invertebrates should be avoided to prevent any aggression.
It may attack LPS corals, soft corals, or zoanthids, making it more suitable for fish-only aquariums. However, some experienced aquarists keep it in reef tanks with robust or less palatable species.
Feeding Pomacanthus annularis
The Pomacanthus annularis is omnivorous with a strong carnivorous tendency. To maintain its health and enhance its colors, it should be fed several times a day with a varied and quality diet:
- Enriched Artemia and mysis
- Mussel, shrimp, or white fish flesh
- Algae and marine sponge-based pellets
- Homemade pasta rich in spirulina or krill
A rich and regular diet also helps limit its tendency to nibble on polyps and invertebrates.
