Variola louti: the Yellowtail Crescent Grouper, a Majestic Predator for Reefs
The Variola louti, also known as the Yellowtail Crescent Grouper, is a spectacular marine grouper native to the Indo-Pacific region. Appreciated for its vibrant colors and majestic presence, this fish is intended for experienced aquarists who can provide a spacious aquarium suitable for its needs.
The Variola louti grouper features an elongated vermilion body, dotted with small lilac spots. Its fins are enhanced with yellowish highlights, characteristics that earn it the nickname of Yellowtail Crescent. This fish can reach up to 82 cm in its natural environment, although in an aquarium, its size is typically limited to around 50 cm.
A Solitary and Territorial Behavior
The Variola louti is a territorial and solitary fish. Very attached to its space, it can be intolerant towards other large carnivores if they encroach on its territory. However, if it has sufficient volume and a suitable setup, it peacefully coexists with other robust large fish.
This Yellowtail Crescent Grouper is not compatible with small fish or invertebrates, which it considers potential prey.
A Minimum 1000-Liter Aquarium
The Variola louti grouper requires a marine aquarium of at least 1000 liters to ensure its well-being. The setup should include:
- A massive and stable rocky decor to form secure shelters,
- An open and clear swimming space,
- Powerful water circulation to maintain excellent water quality.
A Strictly Carnivorous Diet
The Variola louti is a carnivorous predator that primarily feeds on small fish and crustaceans. In captivity, it accepts:
- High-quality thawed fish,
- Krill, raw shrimp, chopped mussels,
- Specialized food for large marine carnivores.
A daily feeding is recommended to satisfy its appetite and limit its aggressive feeding behavior.
