The electronic refractometer Milwaukee MA887 is an optical instrument designed to measure the salinity of natural or artificial seawater as well as brackish water. It uses refractive index measurement to provide a reliable and reproducible value, without the uncertainty associated with mechanical refractometers.
The MA887 measures the refractive index of the sample and automatically converts it into different units of salinity. The conversion algorithms are based on the actual physical properties of seawater and not on simple sodium chloride solutions.
After a simple calibration performed by the user with distilled or osmosis water, it takes just a few seconds to obtain the salinity value. The device simultaneously displays the temperature and the measured value on a large dual-level digital screen.
The MA887 displays salinity in practical salinity units, parts per thousand, or density. It features automatic temperature compensation and an automatic shut-off to preserve battery life.
