Ruditapes philippinarum – Burrowing Japanese Clam for Reef Aquarium

Ruditapes philippinarum is a burrowing marine clam native to the Indo-Pacific region. This bivalve, structurally similar to the giant clam, has two rigid and symmetrical valves, but is distinguished by its discreet behavior, buried under the substrate.

A useful and autonomous bivalve

The Japanese clam feeds completely naturally through an inhalant siphon that it extends to the surface of the sand or sediment. This siphon allows it to continuously filter water to capture phytoplankton particles and other suspended organic matter.

This feeding method contributes to the improvement of the water quality in the reef aquarium while respecting the biological balance of the environment.

Maintenance conditions

  • Minimum recommended volume: 100 liters
  • Temperature: 24°C to 27°C
  • pH: 8.0 to 8.4
  • Substrate: fine sand or loose sediment (minimum 4 cm thick)
  • Lighting: standard

Compatibility and behavior

The Ruditapes philippinarum is a completely peaceful animal, compatible with all corals, invertebrates, and fish in a reef tank. It generally remains buried in the substrate, with only its siphon protruding. There is no risk of predation or visual disturbance: this clam is as discreet as it is efficient.

It actively participates in water cleaning and reducing organic matter, while playing a useful ecological role in the aquarium.

Why choose Ruditapes philippinarum?

  • Natural and autonomous filtering animal
  • Contributes to the balance of reef water
  • Compatible with all tank inhabitants
  • Very discreet and easy to maintain
  • Requires no specific feeding

Ruditapes philippinarum is a natural and aesthetic solution to improve water quality in your reef aquarium. A discreet yet valuable presence for aquarists keen on maintaining a healthy and balanced tank.
