Spondylus sp., also known as spondylus shell, is an ideal filter feeder bivalve for well-established reef aquariums. This mollusk naturally lives in shaded areas of coral reefs, often attached under rocky overhangs. It does not tolerate direct and prolonged exposure to intense light, making it necessary to place it in a shaded area of the setup.
The spondylus shell continuously filters the water, capturing organic microparticles and phytoplankton. This makes it an excellent ally for maintaining water quality in a reef aquarium.
Over time, its shell naturally becomes covered with coralline algae, small sponges, and sometimes tiny filtering invertebrates. This contributes to the perfect visual integration of the Spondylus within a natural setup.
