Spondylus sp. – Spondylus Shell Filter for Reef Aquarium

Spondylus sp., also known as spondylus shell, is an ideal filter feeder bivalve for well-established reef aquariums. This mollusk naturally lives in shaded areas of coral reefs, often attached under rocky overhangs. It does not tolerate direct and prolonged exposure to intense light, making it necessary to place it in a shaded area of the setup.

A Discreet and Useful Bivalve

The spondylus shell continuously filters the water, capturing organic microparticles and phytoplankton. This makes it an excellent ally for maintaining water quality in a reef aquarium.

Over time, its shell naturally becomes covered with coralline algae, small sponges, and sometimes tiny filtering invertebrates. This contributes to the perfect visual integration of the Spondylus within a natural setup.

Maintenance Conditions

Recommended minimum volume: 80 liters
Temperature: 24°C to 27°C
Lighting: indirect, shaded
Placement: under rocky overhangs or in calm areas of the tank

Feeding

The Spondylus sp. feeds exclusively by filtration. It consumes:

  • live or freeze-dried phytoplankton
  • organic microparticles present in the water

A regular supply of phytoplankton is recommended to support its growth and longevity.

Why Choose Spondylus sp.?

  • Contributes to water purification through natural filtration
  • Aesthetic: its shell becomes a true living decorative element
  • Perfectly compatible with a mature reef
  • Easy to install under a rock or in a crevice

The Spondylus sp. is a decorative and functional shell to integrate into the shaded areas of your reef. Naturally camouflaged, it contributes to the health of the aquarium while adding a touch of authenticity and biological diversity.
