Coral Propagation for Reef Aquariums

Coral propagation became popular in the 1990s with the rise of modern reef aquariums. Inspired by aquaculture and reef restoration practices, this technique involves fragmenting a healthy coral to create new colonies, while limiting the harvesting from natural environments.

Propagation tools and supports have evolved to offer precision, safety, and stability: ceramic plugs, magnetic supports, specific adhesives, and instruments adapted to the different morphologies of corals. These tools facilitate attachment and promote rapid healing of the fragments.

Propagation allows for the multiplication of selected strains, optimizes space in the aquarium, and enables enthusiasts to share specimens with one another. When done correctly, it contributes to the sustainability of reef aquariums and the development of responsible breeding.
