Water treatment

Water Treatment

The Water Treatment category includes all devices and products designed to purify, remineralize, and maintain the chemical and microbiological quality of water in reef aquariums.

Operating Principles

  • Reverse osmosis: eliminates >95% of impurities, heavy metals, and microorganisms to achieve ultra-pure base water.
  • Resin filtration: deionization (MB20) or specialized resins to target undesirable ions (phosphates, nitrates, silicates).
  • Activated carbon & adsorbers: adsorption of dissolved organic matter, yellow dyes, metalloid compounds (Al, Fe, organics).
  • UV & ozone sterilization: inactivation of bacteria, viruses, and control of planktonic algae in suspension.

Advantages

  • Guaranteed quality: near-complete elimination of pollutants and contaminants.
  • Chemical stability: pure water facilitating precise control and adjustment of parameters (salinity, pH, alkalinity).
  • Health prevention: reduction of risks of infectious diseases and microbial proliferations.
  • Flexibility: combinations of technologies (osmosis, resins, carbon, UV) can be adjusted according to budget and treated volume.

Usage Recommendations

  • Install a reverse osmosis unit with 2 to 4 stages and a 75–100 GPD membrane suitable for the aquarium's volume.
  • Add a deionizing resin filter (MB20) at the output of the osmosis to lower the conductivity < 10 µS/cm.
  • Place an activated carbon cartridge (Carb L) and/or anti-phosphate resin (Phos 0.04) inline to trap residual organics and phosphates.
  • If necessary, install a UV sterilizer (15–30 W for 500 L) or an ozone generator (10–20 mg/h for 1000 L) to control bacteria and planktonic algae.
  • Rinse and replace cartridges regularly (every 6–12 months depending on usage) and monitor output quality with a conductivity or TDS meter.
