Undesirable treatments

Undesirable Treatments

The Undesirable Treatments category includes methods and products aimed at removing harmful substances and pollutants from the aquarium (excess nutrients, heavy metals, organic compounds, silicates, etc.).

Operating Principles

  • Specialized Resins: anti-phosphate (Phos 0.04, PowerPhos), anti-heavy metals (Ultra Phos, iron/aluminum-based resins) to selectively trap undesirable ions.
  • Activated Carbon: adsorption of yellow compounds, dissolved organic molecules, and undesirable pigments.
  • Ozone & UV: oxidation and degradation of refractory organic substances, reduction of bacterial and planktonic load.
  • Bioremediation: bio-filtration (denitrifying bacteria in fixed bed, biological zeolite) to transform nitrates and phosphates into gaseous nitrogen and stable minerals.

Advantages

  • Water Clarity: elimination of undesirable colors and turbidity.
  • Nutrient Control: maintaining NO₃ and PO₄ at safe levels, preventing algae and cyanobacteria blooms.
  • Coral Protection: reduction of exposure to heavy metals and toxic organic compounds.
  • Flexibility: modular combinations of media to target multiple pollutants simultaneously.

Usage Recommendations

  • Install resins and activated carbon in-line or in a dedicated chamber, with a regular flow rate of 5–10% of the hourly volume.
  • Renew or regenerate resins every 2–4 weeks depending on the pollutant load.
  • Schedule ozone or UV lamp with an interim pass over activated carbon on exit to capture oxidized by-products.
  • Combine with a fluidized bed biological zeolite filter for continuous action on nitrates and ammonia.
  • Monitor targeted parameters weekly (NO₃, PO₄, SiO₄, heavy metals) and adjust the choice and quantity of media based on the results.
