Acropora hyacintus Red Planet
The Acropora hyacintus Red Planet is a spectacular SPS coral, appreciated for its intense red color and tabular appearance. This strain is renowned for its fast growth and its ability to create an impressive display in a well-balanced reef aquarium.
Characteristics and Maintenance
Lighting
Intense lighting is essential to reveal the vibrant colors of this coral. It is recommended to provide between 300 and 600 PAR, with a dominance of blue light (15,000K to 20,000K) to enhance its fluorescence.
Insufficient exposure can lead to browning, while overly intense lighting without gradual adaptation can cause stress.
Water Flow
A strong and irregular water flow is crucial to maintain the health of the coral and prevent the accumulation of sediments on its sprawling branches. Wide-flow pumps and random oscillators are particularly effective.
Water Quality
The Acropora hyacintus Red Planet requires stable parameters and an environment rich in trace elements:
- Nitrates: between 2 and 10 mg/L
- Phosphates: between 0.02 and 0.06 mg/L
- KH: 7 to 8
- Calcium: 440 mg/L
- Magnesium: between 1350 and 1450 mg/L
Regular monitoring with ICP tests is advised to adjust trace elements and ensure optimal growth.
Feeding
This SPS coral draws most of its energy from photosynthesis, but supplemental feeding can enhance its growth and coloration:
- Artemia nauplii
- Frozen red plankton
- Specific granules for SPS corals (400 - 800 µm)
- Amino acid and trace element supplements
Aggressiveness and Compatibility
Although not very aggressive, the Acropora hyacintus Red Planet should be placed at a good distance from stinging corals like Euphyllia or Galaxea. It is advisable to give it enough space to grow without interference.
