Blue Icefire Acropora echinata
The Acropora echinata Blue Icefire is an exceptional SPS coral, sought after for its icy blue hue and white tips. Its crystalline appearance and rapid growth make it a centerpiece for any well-maintained reef aquarium.
Characteristics and Maintenance
Morphology and Color
This coral is distinguished by:
- A slender and pointed structure, with tapered branches.
- A pale blue to icy blue coloration, influenced by lighting and nutrients.
- White or cream tips that strongly contrast with the base.
Lighting
Intense lighting is required:
- Recommended intensity between 300 and 600 PAR.
- Suggested light spectrum: blue dominant (15,000K to 20,000K).
- Gradual adaptation is recommended to avoid stress.
Water Flow
Strong and random water flow is essential:
- Promote a constant flow to prevent sediment buildup.
- Use wide-dispersion pumps to simulate natural current.
Water Quality
This SPS coral requires a stable environment with the following parameters:
- Nitrates: between 2 and 10 mg/L.
- Phosphates: between 0.02 and 0.06 mg/L.
- KH: between 7 and 8, to be kept stable.
- Calcium: 440 mg/L.
- Magnesium: between 1350 and 1450 mg/L.
Regular ICP tests are advised to adjust trace elements.
Feeding
Although primarily photosynthetic, complementary feeding encourages its growth:
- Brine shrimp nauplii.
- Frozen red plankton.
- Specific pellets for SPS corals (400 - 800 µm).
- Amino acids and trace elements as supplements.
Aggressiveness and Compatibility
This coral is not very aggressive, but it should be placed with care:
- Avoid proximity to stinging corals like Euphyllia or Galaxea.
- Leave sufficient space to ensure proper development.
