Holacanthus ciliaris: a royal angelfish with spectacular colors

The Holacanthus ciliaris, also known as the royal angelfish, is one of the most majestic marine fish in the tropical Atlantic Ocean. With its elongated body featuring bright yellow and electric blue hues, it is immediately recognizable. Orange touches adorn its fins, giving it a unique glow in a marine aquarium.

In its juvenile state, the royal angelfish displays a different livery, dominated by deep blue with electric blue vertical stripes. This spectacular transformation over its growth fascinates aquarists. Its adult size can reach 45 cm, and its lifespan exceeds 15 years in an aquarium when kept under good conditions.

Keeping Holacanthus ciliaris in an aquarium

This fish requires an environment rich in hiding places and a large swimming space. It is not advisable to introduce it into an aquarium containing sponges, as it may consume them.

  • Minimum volume: 1000 liters
  • Temperature: between 22°C and 26°C
  • Behavior: territorial with its conspecifics, more peaceful with other species
  • Compatibility: not recommended with other angelfish of the same genus

In the wild, this specimen is often observed alone or in pairs, moving near coral reefs. In an aquarium, a royal angelfish needs a complex rocky decor to feel secure. Its behavior can become aggressive towards other angelfish if the volume is insufficient.

Varied and balanced diet

Omnivorous with a carnivorous tendency, Holacanthus ciliaris needs a diverse diet to preserve its colors and vitality. It is recommended to offer it:

  • thawed brine shrimp and mysis,
  • homemade protein-rich pâté,
  • pellets and enriched foods for marine fish,
  • and vegetable supplements like nori sheets or dried seaweed.

A distribution in several meals per day is preferable to avoid hunger-related aggressive behaviors.

A jewel reserved for experienced aquarists

The royal angelfish Holacanthus ciliaris is a true centerpiece for exhibition marine aquariums. Its size, longevity, and specific needs make it an animal for seasoned enthusiasts. It is perfectly suited for a fish-only tank or a very large community aquarium, provided that its tankmates are chosen carefully.

Thanks to its vibrant colors and curious behavior, it draws all eyes. A reliable choice for aquarists wishing to make their marine aquarium a true living spectacle.
