Pygoplites diacanthus: the Majestic Regal Angelfish with Vibrant Colors
The Pygoplites diacanthus, known as the Regal Angelfish, is one of the most iconic and colorful fish in marine aquariums. It is distinguished by its intensely yellow oval-shaped body crossed by vertical white stripes edged with electric blue, a true living jewel. It is mainly found in coral reefs, lagoons, and rocky areas rich in hiding places.
A Demanding Fish Reserved for Experienced Aquarists
The care of the Regal Angelfish is reserved for experienced enthusiasts. It is strongly recommended to keep it in a reef tank of at least 450 liters. For successful cohabitation with other angelfishes, a very large tank with many refuges will be necessary, as intraspecific relations can become conflictual.
The water should be maintained between 23° and 28°C, with a pH of 8 to 8.5. The Pygoplites diacanthus is very sensitive to nitrates and water quality, requiring excellent stability of parameters and rigorous maintenance. It generally tolerates other peaceful species well, but remains one of the most delicate angelfishes to acclimate.
A Rich and Varied Diet
The diet of the Regal Angelfish is an essential element of its success in captivity. It is recommended to feed it several times a day with high-quality products, including:
- Artemia and mysis
- Krill, mussels, shrimp, chopped squid
- Fresh or dried algae
- Specific pellets for angelfishes
In case of deficiencies or stress, it might nibble on some coral polyps, but this has no impact if the coral population is sufficient and the food is well distributed. Its feeding behavior remains one of the most sensitive criteria to monitor to ensure its proper acclimatization.
A Living Jewel for Reef Enthusiasts
The Pygoplites diacanthus is considered a true exceptional fish, bringing an imperial touch to any aquarium. Its colorful robe, majestic movements, and rarity make it a preferred choice for high-end reef tanks. Provided its requirements are met, it becomes a fascinating companion to observe daily.
