Paracentropyge multifasciata: a rare and striped angelfish for fish-only aquariums

The Paracentropyge multifasciata, also known as the multibarred angelfish, is a gem of the Indo-Pacific reefs. Its oval body is adorned with black and white vertical stripes, offering a unique graphic contrast that immediately catches the eye. As an adult, it measures between 8 and 12 cm and remains discreet, predominantly inhabiting shaded areas or sheltered spots.

This species belongs to the Pomacanthidae family and is sought after by experienced aquarists for its unique beauty. However, its care requires certain precautions, as the Paracentropyge multifasciata is a shy fish, delicate to acclimate, and sometimes difficult to feed in captivity.

Care Conditions for Paracentropyge multifasciata

  • Recommended minimum volume: 300 liters
  • Water temperature: between 23°C and 27°C
  • Water flow: moderate, with calm areas for refuge
  • Lighting: low to moderate (it avoids overly exposed areas)

The aquarium decor should be rich in live rocks, forming numerous natural hiding spots essential for its well-being. Adding non-stinging corals or caves is recommended to recreate its natural environment.

Behavior and Cohabitation

The Paracentropyge multifasciata is a peaceful fish, though somewhat timid. It is preferable to introduce it into a fish-only aquarium, without sensitive corals, as it may occasionally nip at certain polyps. It coexists well with other calm fish, provided it avoids direct food competition.

Intraspecific relationships should be avoided: it should be kept as a single individual, except in the case of a formed pair introduced simultaneously into a large tank.

Feeding the Paracentropyge multifasciata

This angelfish follows an omnivorous diet with a carnivorous tendency. In its natural habitat, it feeds on small invertebrates, sponges, algae, and microfauna. In an aquarium, it can be difficult to acclimate to inert food. It is recommended to offer it:

  • Enriched mysis and artemia,
  • Chopped seafood mixes,
  • Homemade pastes based on sponge or spirulina,
  • and gradually, high-quality soft pellets.

Frequent feeding (3 to 4 times a day) in small quantities is essential for its proper acclimatization. Special attention should be paid during the first few weeks following its introduction.

A Fish for Experienced Enthusiasts

The Paracentropyge multifasciata is an exceptional choice, both for its rare beauty and the aquaristic challenge it represents. Its care is reserved for dedicated enthusiasts with a mature, stable, and well-structured aquarium. It is not recommended for reef aquariums containing LPS or sensitive soft corals.

For fans of discreet and elegant angelfish, the Paracentropyge multifasciata remains a must-see, thriving in a well-shaded decor.
