Pomacanthus asfur: Royal Angelfish of the Red Sea

The Pomacanthus asfur, often nicknamed the Royal Angelfish of the Red Sea, is an exceptional fish, prized for its striking colors and majestic presence. This specimen is immediately recognizable by its dark blue body adorned with a bright yellow diagonal band running across its side. The bright yellow tail completes this royal attire that captures attention in any aquarium.

Native to the coral reefs of the Red Sea and the Arabian Peninsula, this angelfish commands a certain presence. Solitary or in pairs, it generally inhabits shallow waters, in areas rich with hideouts and cavities. Its adult size can reach 40 cm, requiring a substantial swimming space.

Aquarium Maintenance Conditions

  • Minimum volume: 600 liters (preferably 800 liters and above for an adult)
  • Temperature: between 24°C and 28°C
  • Water circulation: moderate to strong
  • Decor: rich in live rocks and rocky hideouts

The Pomacanthus asfur requires a well-structured large marine aquarium. It enjoys exploring its territory and sleeping in cavities away from light. The more stable the environment, the more it will reveal the richness of its colors. This fish is particularly sensitive to water quality and parameter stability.

Behavior and Coexistence

With a territorial nature, the Pomacanthus asfur can exhibit aggression towards other angelfish or fish of similar size and shape. It is advisable to keep it alone or in a pair in large tanks. Smaller and calmer species should be introduced before it to avoid any dominant behavior.

However, it is peaceful with other non-competing species, and coexists without problems with active, robust fish of equivalent size.

Feeding the Pomacanthus asfur

This angelfish is an omnivore with a spongivore tendency. In its natural habitat, it feeds on marine sponges, algae, tunicates, and various fixed invertebrates. In an aquarium, a varied diet is essential to maintain its health and colors.

  • Enriched brine shrimp, krill, and mysis
  • Raw mussel or shrimp meat
  • High-quality marine pellets based on algae and sponge
  • Homemade food rich in spirulina

Feed 2 to 3 times a day, in small quantities, to ensure good assimilation and avoid polluting the tank.

A Prestigious Angel for Exceptional Tanks

The Pomacanthus asfur is one of the most emblematic fish of the Red Sea. Majestic, colorful, and imposing, it symbolizes the prestige and beauty of large reef or fish-only aquariums. Its yellow band makes it unique among Pomacanthids. Reserved for experienced aquarists with the space and means to provide this jewel with a habitat worthy of its stature.
