Pseudanthias bimaculatus: the Two-Spot Anthias Fish

The Pseudanthias bimaculatus, also known as the two-spot anthias, is a reef fish highly prized for its beauty and group behavior. Its elongated body showcases a purple to pinkish-red gradient, subtly contrasted by bright yellow fins. Its common name comes from the two distinctive small marks visible on its sides.

A Colorful Anthias to Keep in Groups

The Pseudanthias bimaculatus is a gregarious fish that thrives in a group of at least 5 individuals, including one male and several females. Its behavior becomes more natural, with an interesting social hierarchy to observe. This is a diurnal fish that occupies the water column, gracefully moving back and forth.

To ensure its well-being, a tank of at least 500 liters is essential. This volume allows for maintaining a small group of 10 individuals while providing them with swimming space and numerous hiding spots, particularly among live rocks.

Feeding the Pseudanthias bimaculatus

Like all anthias, the Pseudanthias bimaculatus is a microcarnivore that needs to be fed several times a day. Its ideal diet includes:

  • Enriched brine shrimp
  • Mysis shrimp
  • Red plankton
  • Quality flakes suitable for carnivorous fish
  • Live or frozen copepods and amphipods

Regular distribution throughout the day helps maintain their vitality, colors, and active behavior. A nutritional deficiency can quickly weaken these fish, which is why meticulous feeding is necessary.

A Refined Fish for Reef Aquariums

The Pseudanthias bimaculatus is a peaceful fish with other reef species, making it an excellent choice for community tanks. It prefers shaded areas, rocky overhangs, and good water circulation, similar to its natural habitat.

With its vibrant colors and elegant swimming, this two-spot anthias adds a touch of refinement to your aquarium while energizing reef life.
