Calcinus californiensis, or California Hermit Crab, is a useful and decorative crustacean for any reef aquarium. It is recognized by its reddish body with black legs and its spiraled shell about 2 to 2.5 cm. Native to the Pacific coast of North America and Mexico, it lives in rocky areas and is mostly active at night.
Calcinus californiensis is an opportunistic omnivore: it feeds on both microalgae and leftover food not consumed by fish. Thanks to its constant activity on the ground and on rocks, it actively contributes to limiting organic waste and reducing unwanted algae.
This crustacean poses no danger to fish, invertebrates, or corals. It is perfectly compatible with other members of the reef cleaning crew. However, it is important to provide it with several empty shells of equivalent sizes in the aquarium, as it regularly changes shelters as it grows.
Calcinus californiensis feeds autonomously and does not require specific feeding if the tank is well balanced.
Calcinus californiensis is a versatile hermit crab that perfectly fulfills its role as a biological cleaner. Simple to maintain, effective, and visually unique, it is a discreet yet essential asset in any marine aquarium.
