Dardanus pedunculatus, known as the Green-eyed Hermit Crab or coral-dwelling hermit, is a unique crustacean living in the warm waters of the Indo-Pacific ocean. It is distinguished by its ability to carry sea anemones on its shell, forming a highly stinging natural defense against predators. When this hermit crab changes its shell, it manually transfers its anemones to the new one.
With its bright green eyes, this crustacean, about ten centimeters long, is an opportunistic predator, primarily carnivorous. It hunts small invertebrates, snails, and sometimes even fish if the opportunity arises. It is therefore highly discouraged in reef aquariums with corals and sensitive invertebrates.
It is imperative to provide several spare shells so that it can change habitat as it grows. In an aquarium, it continues to maintain its anemones, often of the genus Calliactis, carefully attaching them to its new shell.
Dardanus pedunculatus is a hermit crab strictly reserved for fish-only tanks, with fish of equal or larger size. It is incompatible with snails, shrimp, starfish, corals, and any small invertebrates.
Its stinging anemones can also harm some overly curious fish or species sensitive to contact toxin. It is therefore essential to create a secure environment and monitor its behavior upon introduction.
Dardanus pedunculatus is a hermit crab as impressive as it is efficient. Its predatory nature and defensive anemones make it a choice reserved for experienced aquarists with a specific tank for carnivorous and atypical species.
