Chaetodon auriga: the threadfin butterflyfish, a vibrant butterfly for marine aquariums

The Chaetodon auriga, also known as the threadfin butterflyfish, is a butterflyfish renowned for its beauty and graceful swimming. Native to the coral reefs of the Indo-Pacific, this fish captivates with its vibrant colors and active behavior, bringing dynamism and elegance to any spacious marine aquarium.

The Chaetodon auriga has an elliptical body that is half white, half yellow, decorated with diagonal brown stripes. A wide vertical black band crosses its eye, and a distinctive black eyespot is visible near the dorsal fin, mimicking a false eye to deceive predators. This fish can grow up to 20 cm in adulthood.

An active and social behavior

The Chaetodon auriga is a lively and energetic fish. In the wild, it lives in groups or pairs and continuously roams the coral reefs in search of food. In an aquarium, its intense swimming requires a large space to move freely.

It is preferable to keep only one individual per tank to avoid dominance behaviors among conspecifics, except in very large, well-arranged volumes.

A spacious aquarium from 450 liters

The threadfin butterflyfish Chaetodon auriga requires an aquarium of at least 450 liters to thrive fully. The ideal setup should include:

  • A stable and airy rocky decor for exploring and resting,
  • Areas of algal vegetation for natural grazing behavior,
  • A clear swimming space to encourage its incessant mobility.

An opportunistic omnivorous diet

The Chaetodon auriga is an omnivore that feeds on both coral polyps and small planktonic prey in the wild. In captivity, it readily accepts:

  • Live or thawed brine shrimp and mysis,
  • High-quality marine omnivore pellets,
  • Natural algae available in the tank.

Be careful, due to its tendency to consume coral polyps, it is preferable to keep the Chaetodon auriga in a fish-only tank or with non-palatable resistant corals.

A brilliant fish for dynamic marine aquariums

The Chaetodon auriga is a spectacular butterflyfish that will bring life, color, and movement to your marine aquarium. Its robust nature, easy-to-manage omnivorous diet, and striking appearance make it an excellent choice for aquarists looking to introduce a dynamic species into a well-structured tank.

With spacious volume, varied diet, and an environment rich in hiding places and vegetation, the threadfin butterflyfish Chaetodon auriga will become a central and lively element of your aquarium from 450 liters.
