Chaetodon capistratus: the four-eyed butterflyfish, a brilliant and useful ally for reef aquariums

The Chaetodon capistratus, also known as the four-eyed butterflyfish, is an elegant and useful butterflyfish native to the coral reefs of the Western Atlantic. Its peaceful temperament, subtle beauty, and dietary habits make it an excellent addition to spacious reef aquariums.

The Chaetodon capistratus has a silvery gray elliptical body, adorned with black diagonal lines on the sides. On the rear of the body, a black spot encircled with white creates the illusion of a false eye to deceive its predators. A vertical black band also crosses its natural eye, enhancing its effective camouflage. This fish measures between 13 and 15 cm when fully grown.

A lively yet peaceful behavior

The Chaetodon capistratus is an active and sociable fish that generally moves alone or in pairs. It tirelessly explores reefs and lagoons in search of food. In aquariums, it is known for its great adaptability and ability to coexist with other non-aggressive fish.

This four-eyed butterflyfish is appreciated for its relative ease of approach and its ability to maintain good interspecies relationships in a community aquarium.

A spacious aquarium starting at 450 liters

To ensure the health and well-being of the Chaetodon capistratus, a minimum 450-liter aquarium is required. The ideal setup should include:

  • A rich rocky decor offering many natural hiding places,
  • A variety of algal vegetation to support its natural grazing behavior,
  • A free swimming space promoting its continuous activity.

An opportunistic carnivorous diet and an Aiptasia eater

The Chaetodon capistratus is an omnivore with carnivorous tendencies that primarily feeds on small benthic invertebrates. It is also known to consume Aiptasia, those invasive anemones often problematic in reef aquariums.

In captivity, it accepts:

  • Live or thawed Artemia, mysis,
  • Small pieces of shrimp and carnivorous foods,
  • High-quality marine pellets for omnivorous fish.

A daily feeding schedule is recommended to maintain its health, vibrant coloration, and appetite for Aiptasia.

A useful and aesthetic fish for reef or fish-only aquariums

The four-eyed butterflyfish Chaetodon capistratus is an excellent choice to enhance a large marine aquarium while providing a natural solution against Aiptasia. Its liveliness, robustness, and peaceful temperament make it a valuable ally for passionate aquarists.

With adequate swimming space, a rich decor, and a varied diet, the Chaetodon capistratus will bring beauty, movement, and balance to your reef aquarium starting at 450 liters.
