Premnas biaculeatus is a calm-natured and robust-looking clownfish, also known as the spinecheek clownfish. It is distinguished by its dark red to mahogany brown coloration, often adorned with thick or continuous white bands, and by the presence of a small characteristic spine located behind each eye.
Origin and Natural Habitat
Originally from the Indonesian seas, the Philippines, and the eastern Indian Ocean, this species naturally frequents shallow waters where the bottom is both sandy and rocky. It prefers areas bathed by a moderate current, conditions that are recommended to be replicated in an aquarium.
Maintenance Conditions
- Minimum volume: 200 liters
- Temperature: 22°C to 26°C
- pH: 8.2 to 8.4
- Decor: sandy bottom, rocky areas, presence of anemone (optional)
- Flow: moderate
The Premnas biaculeatus appreciates calm and shaded areas, with spaces for refuge. It can live alone or in a formed pair, and coexists well with other peaceful species.
Behavior and Compatibility
Despite its robustness and larger size compared to other clowns, it remains not very aggressive. It can be introduced into a community aquarium without issue, provided that its companions are compatible in size and temperament.
Diet
- Protein-rich marine pellets
- Brine shrimp, mysis, finely chopped krill
- Enriched marine flakes, vegetable supplements
This fish is omnivorous with a carnivorous tendency. A varied and regular diet helps enhance its coloration and immune system.

- Stable behavior, not very aggressive
- Ideal for reef aquariums of 200 L and above
- Easy to feed, good for cohabitation
- Suitable for experienced aquarists
