Calloplesiops altivelis, also known as the comet fish, is an elegant and enigmatic species, recognizable by its dark brown body speckled with small aligned white dots and its large dorsal fin reminiscent of a moving comet. This nocturnal, shy, and observant fish brings a subtle yet captivating presence in a well-arranged reef aquarium.
The comet fish has a slender, elongated body dotted with regular white patterns. When it swims or partially hides among rocks, its slow movements and starry appearance evoke the night sky. A false white eye ringed with black at the back of the caudal fin completes its camouflage illusion to deter predators.
Calloplesiops altivelis is a crepuscular and very shy fish. It prefers dark areas, rocky overhangs, or caves, often staying sheltered during the day. It is a peaceful solitary, well-suited to calm aquariums without excessive disturbance.
It coexists well with invertebrates, corals, and other non-aggressive fish, provided its hiding spots are respected. It can become more active and visible as it gets accustomed to its environment.
It's important to create a setup conducive to its discretion: caves, overhangs, and nooks where it can observe without being disturbed.
This fish readily accepts live or thawed prey. It's best to feed it at the end of the day or at dawn when its natural activity increases.
Calloplesiops altivelis is a distinctive choice for aquarists sensitive to discreet, mysterious fish with a unique crepuscular behavior. A refined and rare guest to observe in the corners of your reef.
