Neopetrolisthes maculatus - this small crab lives in symbiosis with anemones (Heteractis, Entacmae, Stichodactyla) or alternatively with Rhodactis. To feed, it deploys two fan-shaped filters that it waves to catch food (plankton, artemia...). It roams around its host all day long.

Neopetrolisthes maculatus is a small porcelain crab highly valued for its symbiotic relationship with anemones. It generally settles on hosts such as Heteractis, Entacmaea, Stichodactyla or even on soft corals like Rhodactis when anemones are absent.
This porcelain crab deploys two filtering fans that it waves in the water column to capture plankton, artemia, or other suspended micro-particles. Its behavior is highly observable and adds a unique dynamic to the reef scenery. It usually remains stationed on its host all day, moving slowly from one area to another.
Neopetrolisthes maculatus is harmless to corals, fish, and invertebrates. However, in the presence of clownfish already established in an anemone, a rivalry may occur. These fish may sometimes chase the crab, especially if space is limited.
Recommended minimum volume: 80 liters
Temperature: between 24°C and 27°C
Water flow: moderate
Lighting: medium to strong if hosted on a photosynthetic anemone
A mature reef aquarium, rich in microfauna, is ideal for maintaining this invertebrate in good conditions. It will appreciate the presence of anemones, soft corals, or textured live rock to attach itself to.
It is common for this crab to arrive with a missing claw or leg due to the stress of capture or transport. This is absolutely not a problem: it will gradually regenerate its limbs through its molts, without affecting its vital functions or behavior.
Neopetrolisthes maculatus is an ideal species for aquarists wishing to observe a beautiful symbiotic relationship while enhancing the functional biodiversity of their reef aquarium.
