EcoTech Marine VorTech MP60mQD: Mobius QuietDrive circulation pump

Discover the EcoTech Marine VorTech MP60mQD circulation pump with Mobius, QuietDrive technology, and powerful flow up to 34,000 L/h for large reef aquariums.

The EcoTech Marine VorTech MP60mQD is a high-performance circulation pump designed for large marine and reef aquariums. With a maximum flow rate of 34,000 L/h, it can move a very large volume of water while producing a wide, programmable current.

Its magnetic coupling system separates the internal impeller from the external motor. This signature VorTech design leaves no electrical cable inside the aquarium, while reducing clutter around the aquascape and corals.

The MP60mQD version integrates QuietDrive technology and compatibility with the Mobius app. Power, flow programs, and different operating periods can therefore be configured according to the needs of the reef aquarium.

A maximum flow rate of 34,000 L/h for large aquariums

The VorTech MP60mQD delivers a flow rate of up to 34,000 L/h. Its power is adjustable to adapt water circulation to the aquarium volume, tank length, aquascape density, and the coral species kept.

EcoTech Marine recommends this pump for aquariums of approximately 450 to 3,800 L. In a very long aquarium, one heavily filled with rockwork, or one with several reef structures, multiple pumps can be used to achieve more even circulation.

Its high flow helps reduce stagnant areas, keep organic particles suspended, and encourage their movement toward the overflow, mechanical filtration, and protein skimmer.

mQD version compatible with the Mobius app

The MP60mQD reference designates the Mobius QuietDrive version of the VorTech MP60 pump. Programming can be done from the Mobius app on a compatible mobile device.

The app allows you to select different flow modes, adjust power, and create a daily program tailored to the aquarium’s operation.

For example, it becomes possible to schedule a dynamic flow period during the day, a cycle intended to suspend settled debris, a temporary reduction during feeding, and calmer circulation at night.

Several EcoTech Marine devices compatible with Mobius can be grouped in the same installation to coordinate their operation from a common interface.

QuietDrive technology for controlled operation

QuietDrive technology ensures precise motor control and gradual power changes. It allows the VorTech MP60mQD to produce powerful circulation while reducing vibrations and operating noise.

Alignment between the internal part and the external motor remains essential. During installation, the pump should be started at low power. The internal part can then be moved slightly up, down, left, or right until the smoothest possible operation is achieved.

A properly aligned pump produces less vibration and helps prevent premature wear of its mechanical components.

A magnetic design with an external motor

The VorTech MP60mQD uses magnetic coupling through the aquarium glass. The motor remains outside, while the impeller and its housing are installed inside.

No cable in the aquarium: only the part needed to move water is visible near the aquascape.

External motor: heat produced by the motor is not directly transferred to the water.

Low internal footprint: space around rocks and coral colonies is preserved.

Simplified maintenance: the internal part can be removed and disassembled without moving the external motor.

No powered electrical component in the water: the design eliminates cables and the electric motor inside the aquarium.

The different flow modes of the VorTech MP60mQD

The EcoTech Marine VorTech MP60mQD circulation pump offers several programs that can reproduce constant, random, pulsed, or evolving currents.

Flow mode Operation in the aquarium
Constant speed Keeps the pump at the selected power to produce a continuous, steady current.
Lagoon Gradually varies power to reproduce the gentle water movement of a lagoon area.
Reef Crest Frequently and strongly changes speed to reproduce the energetic circulation of an exposed reef zone.
Gyre Produces extended current phases at an adjustable frequency. Full directional alternation requires several pumps.
Short Pulse Rapidly alternates between high and low power levels to create pulses or an oscillating movement.
Tidal Swell Moves circulation through chaotic, calmer, and stronger phases, with a final phase designed to move particles.
Nutrient Transport Uses a first phase to suspend debris, then a second phase to direct it toward filtration.

Reef Crest mode for energetic reef circulation

Reef Crest mode reproduces a reef environment exposed to waves and tidal movement. The VorTech MP60mQD regularly changes power to create a random, energetic current.

This mode is especially suitable for large aquariums housing SPS corals. It promotes irregular circulation around branches and helps limit particle buildup within coral colonies.

However, the power must still be adjusted according to coral proximity. Even with a wide flow, a coral placed too close to the pump may receive excessive current.

Lagoon mode for smoother circulation

Lagoon mode changes speed more slowly to reproduce the currents of a marine environment sheltered from strong waves.

This operation may be suitable for mixed aquariums, soft corals, and many LPS corals. It maintains significant circulation while avoiding abrupt power changes.

It is recommended to start with moderate power, then gradually increase flow while observing the movement of coral polyps and tissues.

Nutrient Transport mode to suspend debris

Nutrient Transport mode works in two stages. The first uses a wave movement to lift particles deposited on the bottom, between rocks, and behind the aquascape.

The second stage produces a stronger movement intended to carry particles toward the overflow and filtration equipment.

This program can be used regularly to support aquarium maintenance and limit waste buildup in hard-to-reach areas.

Short Pulse mode and the creation of an oscillating movement

Short Pulse mode alternates between high and low power levels at a frequency ranging from very rapid pulses to more spaced-out pulses.

By adapting this frequency to the aquarium dimensions, the VorTech MP60mQD can create an oscillating movement in the water column. The Wave Auto-Tune function makes it easier to find the frequency that matches the aquarium.

Warning: wave creation places repeated stress on the glass, seams, and stand. Check with the manufacturer that the aquarium and its support are suitable, then gradually increase power without letting the water reach the rim.

Feeding mode and night program

The feeding mode temporarily slows the pump so fish and corals can capture food before it is carried toward the overflow and filtration.

At the end of the programmed period, the VorTech MP60mQD automatically resumes its normal operating mode.

The night program reduces power for several hours to reproduce calmer marine conditions. Sufficient circulation is still maintained to support aquarium oxygenation.

Installation according to glass thickness

The VorTech MP60mQD is designed for installation on glass with a thickness between 0.95 and 2.6 cm. The spacer corresponding to the glass thickness must be selected and installed correctly.

Before installation, the inner and outer glass surfaces must be thoroughly cleaned. Algae, limescale deposits, and grains of sand can prevent proper alignment or damage the surfaces.

The external motor and the internal part must be brought together gradually. The strength of the magnets requires careful handling of both parts to prevent them from colliding violently.

The external motor must never be placed in water. Its cable should be routed upward and secured to the supplied bracket to hold the motor if the two parts accidentally separate.

How should the VorTech MP60mQD be positioned?

The pump should be installed high enough above the sand to avoid moving the substrate, but deep enough below the surface to prevent a vortex from drawing in air.

The pump outlet must remain unobstructed. A rock placed directly in front of the impeller can disrupt the flow, increase vibrations, and reduce circulation in the aquarium.

In a large aquarium, installation on a side panel allows water to be moved across the full length. In a setup with two pumps, they can be placed on opposite sides and programmed to produce coordinated currents.

The final position should be adjusted according to the aquascape. The goal is to achieve circulation around and behind the rocks without sending excessive direct flow onto a nearby colony.

Using multiple VorTech MP60mQD pumps

Several compatible VorTech pumps can be coordinated to create synchronized, alternating, or complementary circulation.

This is especially useful in very long aquariums, installations separating several rock structures, or aquariums housing a large population of SPS corals.

Coordinating multiple pumps makes it possible to vary the direction and intensity of currents throughout the day while reducing weakly circulated areas behind the aquascape.

Compatibility with a backup battery

The VorTech MP60mQD can operate with a compatible EcoTech Marine backup battery sold separately.

In the event of a power outage, the pump automatically switches to reduced operation to extend battery runtime. Maintaining water movement helps preserve gas exchange and aquarium oxygenation.

This safety feature is especially important in large, heavily stocked aquariums, where a prolonged interruption of circulation can quickly reduce available oxygen.

Maintenance of the EcoTech Marine VorTech MP60mQD pump

EcoTech Marine recommends regularly cleaning the internal part to remove algae, organic deposits, and limescale buildup. Maintenance about every six to eight weeks can be performed, with frequency adjusted to aquarium conditions.

The internal part can be disassembled and cleaned with a soft brush under water. If limescale is present, the parts can be placed in a suitable mild acidic solution, then thoroughly rinsed before reassembly.

Strongly acidic products should be avoided, as they may damage the pump components.

The external motor, controller, and power supply must never be submerged. The controller should be installed in a dry, ventilated place protected from splashes and drips from the aquarium.

Box contents

The VorTech MP60mQD is supplied with the internal part, external motor, QuietDrive controller, power supply, power cable, spacers for different glass thicknesses, mounting brackets, cable ties, and foam guard.

The foam guard can be installed around the internal part to reduce the risk of suction for certain small marine animals. It should be checked and cleaned regularly so as not to reduce the pump’s flow rate.

Why choose the EcoTech Marine VorTech MP60mQD?

The EcoTech Marine VorTech MP60mQD combines a maximum flow rate of 34,000 L/h, a cable-free magnetic design inside the aquarium, an external motor, and advanced programming with Mobius.

Its various programs make it possible to adapt circulation to mixed aquariums, soft corals, LPS corals, and systems dominated by SPS corals.

Thanks to its power, QuietDrive technology, and the ability to coordinate multiple pumps, the VorTech MP60mQD is a high-performance solution for creating wide, variable, and natural circulation in a large marine aquarium from 450 to 3,800 L.
