Astatotilapia burtoni is a species of fish belonging to the Cichlidae family. It is also known as Burton's parrotfish or Nyanza parrotfish.
Astatotilapia burtoni is native to the Lake Victoria region in East Africa, where it is primarily found in the freshwater of the lake and its tributaries. It mainly feeds on small invertebrates and aquatic plants.
Burton's parrotfish is medium-sized, reaching a maximum length of 15 cm. It has an elongated body that is laterally compressed, with a broad head and a protrusible mouth. Its color can vary depending on sex and environment, with males often being more colorful than females. Males typically exhibit a blue-green color with yellow and black spots on the body, while females are generally more gray with smaller and less pronounced spots.
Astatotilapia burtoni is a gregarious and territorial fish that requires a medium-sized aquarium with adequate filtration and appropriate decorations for hiding and moving around. It can be kept in a community aquarium with other peaceful fish species, but it is recommended not to introduce it into an aquarium with other fish of its size or species.
