The Tridacna crocea is one of the most beautiful reef clams kept in marine aquariums. Highly prized for its intense colors and often fluorescent mantle, this captive-bred clam from Micronesia is a true reef gem designed for stable, brightly lit reef aquariums.
Origin: captive-bred in Micronesia.
Type: photosynthetic reef clam.
Maximum size: up to around 18 cm.
Recommended lighting: PAR between 250 and 450+.
Suggested placement: directly on stable rock.
Recommended flow: moderate and indirect.
The Tridacna crocea requires a mature, very stable reef aquarium with powerful lighting. This species naturally lives embedded in the rocks of shallow reefs under extremely intense light.
| Parameter | Recommended value |
|---|---|
| Temperature | 24 to 26 °C |
| Salinity | 1.024 to 1.026 |
| KH | 7 to 8.5 |
| Calcium | 420 to 460 mg/L |
| Magnesium | 1250 to 1400 mg/L |
| Nitrates | 2 to 10 mg/L |
| Phosphates | 0.02 to 0.1 mg/L |
Lighting is the most important factor in keeping Tridacna crocea. High PAR is strongly recommended to ensure optimal photosynthesis by the symbiotic zooxanthellae that primarily nourish the clam.
Tridacna crocea prefers to be placed directly on stable rock rather than on sand. Over time, it can attach firmly with its byssus and slightly bore into the rock.
Flow should remain moderate and non-direct to avoid stress or poor mantle extension.
Young specimens may benefit from occasional phytoplankton feedings, while adult individuals derive most of their energy from light.
Special attention should be paid to Pyramidellidae-type parasites as well as fish that may nip the mantle, such as certain angelfish, butterflyfish, or some wrasses.
For optimal care, it is advisable to maintain extremely stable parameters and regularly perform ICP analysis to monitor essential trace elements such as iodine, strontium, and potassium.
Tridacna crocea features mantles in a wide range of often fluorescent colors: electric blue, green, turquoise, gold, or purple depending on the specimen and the lighting used in the aquarium.
Scientific name: Tridacna crocea. The genus Tridacna includes the large photosynthetic reef clams kept in marine aquariums.
