NP-Minus BioPellets are composed of 100% biodegradable polymers and act as a carbon source for aerobic bacteria and other microorganisms. Their use effectively reduces the concentrations of nitrates and phosphates in marine aquarium water.

Operating Principle

NP-Minus biogranules gradually dissolve over several months and serve as a support and carbon source for bacteria. In the presence of nitrate and phosphate, these bacteria develop and form a microbial biomass that consumes these undesirable nutrients.

The biochemical processes involved are highly oxygen-consuming. Therefore, the use in a fluidized bed filter or a pellet reactor is essential to ensure constant aerobic conditions and regular abrasion of the biofilm.

After a start-up phase of several weeks, the bacterial populations self-regulate according to the concentrations of nitrates and phosphates present in the aquarium.

Interaction with the skimmer and the aquarium

When the bio-pellet filter is placed before the skimmer, the excess bacterial biomass resulting from the pellet abrasion is removed by the skimmer, allowing the effective export of nitrates and phosphates out of the system.

In aquariums without a skimmer or when the filter is placed after it, the produced biomass can be used as a food source by the aquarium inhabitants and the corals.

The use of NP-Minus can also help prevent or reduce the development of cyanobacteria, due to the competition exerted by the bacteria present on the biogranules.

Important Usage Conditions

Sufficient gas exchange must be ensured in the aquarium to avoid any dangerous drop in oxygen, especially during the night. The use of a skimmer and appropriate water flow is strongly recommended.

The use of UV lamps, ozone, sponge filters, or filter media promoting bacterial destruction can reduce the effectiveness of the biogranules.

Dosage

To avoid excessive bacterial proliferation resulting in cloudy water, the gradual addition of biogranules is recommended. Start with about 30% of the target amount and increase in steps spaced about a week apart.

The biogranules cannot be overdosed. Bacterial populations automatically adapt to the availability of nitrate and phosphate.

The pellets are generally consumed over a period of 6 to 12 months. Regular adjustment is necessary, accompanied by nitrate and phosphate measurements to avoid excessive drop in concentrations.
