The Oxycirrhites typus: A Predator with a Checkered Body

The Oxycirrhites typus, also known as the Longnose Hawkfish, is a fusiform marine animal with a peaceful temperament. However, its hunting instinct makes it incompatible with shrimp and invertebrates. With other fish, though, it maintains excellent relationships.

Oxycirrhites typus: the Scottish Longnose Hawkfish, Graceful and Charismatic

The Oxycirrhites typus, nicknamed the Scottish Longnose Hawkfish, is a distinctive hawkfish. This small observational predator, native to the tropical coral reefs of the Indian and Pacific Oceans, is distinguished by its elongated silver body covered with a vivid red grid pattern. It has a long tapered snout, useful for capturing its prey, and a large dorsal fin adorned with erect rays, typical of the Cirrhitidae family.

The Scottish Longnose Hawkfish measures an average of 10 cm when fully grown. It lives alone or in pairs and particularly favors elevated areas such as gorgonians, branches, or vertical structures, where it likes to perch to monitor its surroundings. Unlike other more territorial hawkfishes, this specimen is rather sociable and calm.

A Calm and Friendly Behavior

The Oxycirrhites typus is a peaceful and curious fish, capable of forming a bond of trust with its caretaker. It can easily be hand-fed once accustomed to its environment. It coexists well with other peaceful fish but should not be kept with crustaceans or small shrimps, as it naturally enjoys them.

Its solitary or paired behavior is stable, but it is advisable to avoid cohabitation with other similarly shaped hawkfishes in a small space. It is not very territorial but remains faithful to its elevated observation areas.

A Well-Structured Aquarium of At Least 110 Liters

An aquarium of at least 110 liters is required for the Scottish Longnose Hawkfish. This volume allows it to have several elevated observation spots, essential for its behavioral comfort. It is important to provide:

  • Artificial gorgonians or branching corals,
  • Live rocks forming heights,
  • Good oxygenation and moderate water flow.

It prefers the calm areas of the tank with diffused light, where it can perch without stress. It is an excellent candidate for well-decorated reef aquariums, even of medium size.

An Easy-to-Digest Carnivorous Diet

The Oxycirrhites typus is an opportunistic carnivore that readily accepts:

  • Defrosted or live brine shrimp, krill, mysis,
  • Small pieces of mussel, white fish, or shrimp,
  • Carnivorous pellets adapted for reef fish, once acclimated.

It is recommended to feed it twice a day in small amounts, targeting the areas where it likes to perch. Its appetite is consistent, but it remains calm during feeding times.

An Aesthetic, Original, and Accessible Reef Hawkfish

The Scottish Longnose Hawkfish is one of the calmest and easiest Cirrhitidae to maintain. Its perched observer behavior, original checkered coloration, and ease of feeding make it an ideal species for aquarists of any level.

To successfully keep it, simply provide a decor rich in heights, good oxygenation, and an appropriate carnivorous diet. The Oxycirrhites typus thus perfectly integrates into a mixed and decorated reef aquarium, bringing both color and behavior.
