The Amblycirrhitus pinos, better known as the coral hawkfish, is a stocky-looking reef fish, appreciated for its calm behavior, easy adaptation, and mottled appearance. Native to the coral reefs of the western Atlantic, particularly the Caribbean, it frequents rocky areas rich in hiding spots, where it often perches motionless on corals, rocks, or sponges.
The Amblycirrhitus pinos is a small robust fish, reaching about 10 cm in adulthood. Its striped body of brown, red, and white, expressive large eyes, and observant behavior earn it the nickname hawkfish. It closely observes its surroundings from a perch, ready to pounce on prey or change its vantage point.
The coral hawkfish Amblycirrhitus pinos is calm, discreet, and not very mobile. It is content to watch over its territory without much fuss. It is rarely aggressive towards other species but may show some predation towards small ornamental shrimps or certain invertebrates.
It is best kept alone or as a pair in an aquarium of at least 150 liters, well-decorated. It coexists well with other calm or non-territorial fish, provided they are neither too small nor too boisterous. Its territoriality is limited to its favorite perch.
The Amblycirrhitus pinos needs a decor composed of live rocks, overhangs, and elevated resting areas. It likes to perch on a dominant point, from which it observes and hunts discreetly. It does not require a large swimming space but needs a calm and stable environment.
A moderate water flow is sufficient. It appreciates less exposed areas but also the nooks and crannies where it can quickly take refuge. The lighting does not need to be intense, but it should respect the natural rhythm of the reef tank.
The Amblycirrhitus pinos is an opportunistic carnivore. In an aquarium, it accepts a wide variety of meaty foods:
Its diet should be varied and suited to its size. It is recommended to feed one to two times a day, ensuring the food reaches the area where it perches. It may be a bit slow to eat if surrounded by more active fish.
The Amblycirrhitus pinos is an ideal species for aquarists looking for a calm, observant, and non-aggressive fish. Its ability to perch on corals or rocks gives it a unique charm, and its calm behavior adds stability to the tank.
The coral hawkfish is a reliable choice for medium-sized reef tanks, provided it is not kept with very small invertebrates. It perfectly integrates into a well-balanced and serene community.
