The Cyprinocirrhites polyactis, often called the lyre-tail hawkfish or sometimes hawkfish with lyre tail, is an original and peaceful reef fish belonging to the Cirrhitidae family. Unlike other hawkfishes with a solitary temperament, this specimen displays a much more sociable attitude, especially when kept in a suitable environment.
The Cyprinocirrhites polyactis has a light orange to yellow body, often slightly translucent, marked with small light spots and a dark ocellus at the operculum level. Its caudal fin forms a slightly tapered lyre-shaped tail, giving it an elegant and unique appearance. As an adult, it reaches a size of about 12 cm.
The lyre-tail hawkfish is known for its calm temperament. It gets along well with other non-aggressive reef fish and can even be kept in small groups or pairs if the aquarium allows. It does not exhibit marked territoriality like other members of its family.
This fish often adopts a perched position on rocks or branching corals, observing its environment without being fearful. It is also known for not attacking medium to large mobile invertebrates, making it a safer option for mixed reef aquariums.
The Cyprinocirrhites polyactis should be kept in an aquarium with a minimum volume of 300 liters. It particularly appreciates rocky decorations with many elevated resting areas and natural hiding places. Branching corals, mounds, or flat substrate areas are ideal for replicating its natural perches.
The water flow should be moderate to avoid disturbing its sedentary behavior, and lighting can be medium to strong depending on the tank's setup. It is not demanding on parameters but is sensitive to sudden changes.
The Cyprinocirrhites polyactis is a non-aggressive carnivore. It accepts a wide variety of foods, including:
It is recommended to feed 1 to 2 times a day, ensuring that the food reaches the areas where it perches. It is not quick to eat but will feed willingly if not outcompeted by faster fish.
The Cyprinocirrhites polyactis is an excellent option for well-thought-out reef aquariums. Its peaceful coexistence, graceful appearance, and calm behavior make it a wise choice for aquarists looking for an original and non-confrontational fish.
For medium to large-sized, well-decorated aquariums populated with calm fish, the lyre-tail hawkfish is an elegant, low-maintenance species compatible with many invertebrates and knows how to stand out without being dominant.
