Flourish Iron is an iron supplement specifically designed for planted aquariums. Iron is an immobile element in plants, which means it cannot be redistributed from old leaves to new ones. Deficiencies therefore appear primarily on young leaves.

Benefits and Functioning

Iron plays an essential role in the production of chlorophyll. A deficiency leads to chlorosis, characterized by yellowing of young leaves and reduced stem development. In prolonged cases, each new leaf becomes progressively lighter than the previous one.

Iron exists in two main forms: ferrous iron and ferric iron. Ferric iron becomes insoluble at a pH above about 5.5 and precipitates, making it unavailable for foliar absorption. To counter this phenomenon, some products use chelated ferric iron, which, however, limits its actual availability to plants.

Flourish Iron uses a ferrous gluconate iron complex, not a chelate. Thus, the iron is already in its assimilable form, saving plants the energy needed for conversion. Moreover, the weaker iron-gluconate bond compared to chelated iron promotes more efficient foliar absorption.

Gluconate also provides an additional advantage by constituting a complementary carbon source for the plants.
