Corythoichthys intestinalis – Red Bug Cleaner Pipefish

Corythoichthys intestinalis is a unique marine fish from the pipefish family, recognizable by its slim and elongated body, tubular mouth, and rosy tail with which it clings to corals and rocks. It reaches an adult length of about 20 cm and moves slowly in the calm areas of coral reefs.

Its discreet appearance and peaceful behavior make it an excellent ally for carefully arranged reef aquariums. This fish is particularly known for consuming Red Bugs (red mites) that infest corals of the Acropora genus, making it valuable in SPS tanks.

Maintenance Conditions

  • Recommended volume: from 200 liters
  • Temperature: between 24°C and 27°C
  • pH: between 8.0 and 8.4
  • Decor: live rocks, coral branches, calm areas for resting
  • Water flow: moderate to low

Behavior and Compatibility

This pipefish is very peaceful and can coexist with non-aggressive invertebrates and fish. It moves slowly, often in pairs, in the lower area of the aquarium. It regularly clings to structures using its prehensile tail, a characteristic behavior of the Corythoichthys genus.

Specific Feeding

  • Live copepods (mandatory for acclimatization)
  • Enriched zooplankton
  • Small live prey only

The Corythoichthys intestinalis is a demanding fish whose success depends on the availability of live microfauna. It is therefore recommended for experienced aquarists with a mature aquarium with natural refuges.

Why Choose Corythoichthys intestinalis?

  • Useful role against Red Bugs on Acropora
  • Fascinating and peaceful behavior
  • Resilient pipefish among the easiest of its kind
  • Suitable for reefs rich in microfauna

Adopting a Corythoichthys intestinalis means adding to your reef an understated, elegant, and highly functional fish to preserve the health of your SPS coral colonies.
