Parupeneus forsskalii – Yellowbar Goatfish for Reef Aquarium

Parupeneus forsskalii, commonly known as the yellowbar goatfish, is a very active and curious marine fish. It is distinguished by its elongated body with silvery or pinkish hues, crossed by fine dark lines, as well as its two very characteristic yellow sensory barbels located under the mouth. These barbels are used to sift through the sand in search of food, a fascinating behavior to observe in an aquarium.

Native to the Indian Ocean and the Red Sea, the Parupeneus forsskalii frequents sandy areas or shallow coral reefs, where it often moves in small groups. It actively contributes to cleaning the substrate by filtering organic debris and consuming small invertebrates.

Maintenance Conditions

  • Recommended minimum volume: 500 liters
  • Temperature: 24°C to 28°C
  • pH: 8.0 to 8.4
  • Decor: sandy bottom, live rock, free swimming areas
  • Water flow: moderate

Behavior and Compatibility

This fish is peaceful and can cohabit without issue with most non-aggressive reef fish. It can be kept alone or in a small group, if space allows. Very active during the day, it spends a lot of time sifting through the sand, thus contributing to the natural stirring of the substrate.

Avoid keeping it with overly aggressive or territorial species. It will appreciate the presence of numerous hiding spots and shaded areas to rest.

Diet

Parupeneus forsskalii is omnivorous, with a marked preference for benthic prey:

  • Frozen brine shrimp, mysis, krill
  • Chopped small shrimp
  • Suitable protein pellets
  • Live food such as worms, small crustaceans, or copepods

A varied and regular diet will enhance its color and vitality.

Why Choose Parupeneus forsskalii?

  • Curious and very active fish
  • Natural sand cleaner thanks to its sensory barbels
  • Compatible with large volume reef tanks
  • Easy to feed and observe
  • Peaceful fish ideal for community tanks

Parupeneus forsskalii is an excellent addition for aquarists looking to combine aesthetics, useful behavior, and compatibility with a reef aquarium. Its natural curiosity and feeding behavior make it a fascinating fish to maintain in a domestic marine environment.
